Thank you for your support of Ukraine!

Written by Jessica Bomford, May 5, 2022

We’ve been overwhelmed by your generous support of our Ukraine emergency appeal to help people with bleeding disorders who’ve been forced to leave their country because of the conflict.

So far you have donated £2,653, and £218 has also been raised by members of Haemophilia Scotland, which is all being given directly to the European Haemophilia Consortium’s (EHC) short-term Emergency Displacement Fund.

Your support is hugely appreciated and gives feelings of hope and reassurance to our members in Ukraine, knowing that they are not alone.

EHC team

The EHC team asked us to pass on a message to all of you who have donated, it reads: ‘We want to profoundly thank you for your generosity and solidarity at a time when part of our community is affected by an armed conflict and the effect of it is reaching far beyond.

‘You will be happy to hear that the support from the entire community, including you, is hugely appreciated and gives feelings of hope and reassurance to our members in Ukraine, knowing that they are not alone.’

The Emergency Displacement Fund is designed to support the EHC’s National Member Organisations (NMOs) which are working directly with refugees with bleeding disorders to provide immediate help, such as accommodation, food and transport as well as treatment and support with medical appointments.

So far, the EHC has supported the work of its NMOs in Slovakia, which borders Ukraine, and Lithuania. Not only have they given refugees immediate assistance, but they have also helped to integrate them in their new communities. The EHC expects to offer similar support to its NMOs in Poland and Bulgaria very soon and is also providing information to its members in Ukraine about what support is available to them.

The EHC received this message from Andrii from Odessa in Ukraine a few days ago. He said: ‘Hello dear friends! Here it is still without the change. We hear shooting, but we are ok. A huge thank you for your attention. For us it is very important to know that you are with us. Thank you!’

Hosting a family in the UK

If you would like to host an individual or family with a bleeding disorder from the Ukraine, here’s what to do:

  • register with the government’s Homes For Ukraine scheme. You can specify that you’d like to host someone with a bleeding disorder
  • let us know that you’d like to be a host
  • when you are approved as a host, we can help to connect you with a suitable person or family.

Continuing support

Our appeal is still open as, sadly, it seems our support will be needed for some time. We will continue to work with the EHC to try to ensure that the on-going needs of the displaced bleeding disorders community of the Ukraine are being met.

Last month our CEO Kate Burt was interviewed about our support for those affected by the crisis in Ukraine. Read the interview here.
